Creating A Cinematic Effect In Photoshop

A cinematic-style shot is fundamentally one that looks as a frame that was taken from a movie — a shot that simulates the feeling of a bigger story behind it. Some people place black bars above and below their pictures to give effect to feel more cinematic. But the cinematic style is not just about the black bars on top and bottom of the photo but also about powerful emotions coming from your image.

In this tutorial, we’re going to turn an ordinary photo into a cinematic-style photo using a high contrast, bluish tones and other tools in Photoshop. When you increase the contrast, you will be able to create the effect that we’re going to create on your image.

Here is a preview of the before and after effect that we will be creating in Photoshop:

Before

After

You will learn this effect when you apply the adjustment layers and the gradient tool. When you use the gradient tool, the larger area you cover in the image, the more gradual the gradient will be while a smaller creates a sharper gradient.
