Creating a Cool Drunken Monkey Illustration
Here’s a cool cartoon graphic that you’ll enjoy making. This is a featured tutorial by Spanish web designer Sergio Ordonez Suanez who is a freelancer at SOSFactory. The design focuses on creating a very appealing mascot and a logo that provides techniques on Sergio’s workflow.
Sergio shows one of his recent projects namely for the company Drunken Monkey Collectibles. He will show and explain the step-by-step process of the entire design, including the sketches, drafts to final touches using Adobe Photoshop so this one displays everything from scratch.Sergio used the Chinese karate movies as his inspiration to create this design, particularly the Jackie Chan movie Drunken Master.
In drawing the mascot, some of the things to remember are the basic principles in corporate design of mascots. It includes the following: the character must transmit the desired attitude, must be attractive, must be original, the pose should be recognizable and can work on different sizes, don’t overload the drawing, and lines should suggest the volume to the colorist, according to Sergio.
In last stages of the drawing, make sure the sketch is perfect. There may be times that you may need to recreate some parts of the illustration, and reassign line weights, correct errors and simplify volumes.
The logo meanwhile should be funny but at same time should display stability and strength. It should transmit energy and remain flexible.
