Create A QR Code For Your WordPress Using Google URL Shortener

What is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) Code is basically similar to a barcode except you don’t need a special laser scanner to be able to read it. Most importantly, it can carry more information.

Why would your site need a QR Code?

Over the past several months, there has been a growing number of people who use mobile devices such smartphones and tablets to surf the web. These devices sometimes already come with a built-in app, or if not, can have an app installed in them to read QR Codes. This is one reason why some companies (not just bloggers) have decided to create a QR Code for their websites.

How can you create a QR Code for your website?

One good thing about using Google’s URL shortener is that aside from giving your site’s URL a shorter name version, it also gives it its own QR Code image. Follow the instructions below to get your QR image:

  1. Head over to goo.gl and key in your site’s URL
  2. Click on the blue ‘Shorten URL’ button and copy the URL it gives you
  3. Open a new browser tab or window
  4. Paste your shortened URL in the address bar AND append “.qr” at the end
  5. Press ‘Enter’ and you’ll get the URL for your QR Code

So basically, by appending a “.qr” to any URL you create using Google URL shortener will give you the link to your QR code image.

So now on to the next phase, how do you put it in your WordPress blog?

  1. On your WordPress dashboard, go to ‘Appearance’ > ‘Widgets
  2. Drag your ‘Text’ widget into your sidebar
  3. Paste your shortened URL on the content box inside an <IMG> tag (as shown below):

  1. Then just hit the ‘Save’ button.

And that’s basically it! Check your webpage to see the result.
